Moving to Idaho

Idaho became the 43rd state ON July 3^rd, 1890. Idaho is affectionately known as the gem state due the original incorrect assumption that the name Idaho comes from the Indian name for gem or the mountain.

Origin of state’s name: The name Idaho was a word invented for the state and does not owe its origin to any Indian word as many people believe.

Capital

The states capital is Boise and the state is bordered by several other states including Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming

Population

The population of Idaho is in excess of 1.2 million people

Economy – The main agriculture is potatoes (famous Idaho potatoes), cattle and dairy, wheat, barely and sugar beet. The main industries are tourism, wood and wood products, and food processing.

State Bird: Idaho’s state bird is the Mountain Bluebird which is also Nevada’s state bird. The Mountain Bluebird has characteristic blue plumage on its back.

State Flower: The state flower is the Syringa or Philadelphus Lewissi which has a white fragrant flower.

State Song: The state Song is “Here we have Idaho” which is a wonderful song in praise of the state of Idaho.

Idaho - Interesting Facts

Idaho's world famous hot springs are located in Lava Hot Springs.
The city of Grace is most famous for their seed potatoes.
The elevation of Cambridge is 2,650 feet above sea level with the surrounding mountains reaching elevations around 8000 feet and plummeting to around 1500 feet in Hells Canyon.
The economy of Idaho City originally developed around gold mining in the late 19^th century.
Hell's Canyon is the deepest gorge in America.
Shoshone Falls, The Niagara of the West, spills over a nearly 250 foot drop near Twin Falls.
Shelley has been the home of the Idaho Annual Spud Day since early in the 20^th century.
